The Terrace do Fim do Mundo…The municipality of Dirico, located in the southernmost part of the country and the far south of Kuando Kubango province, is bordered south by the Okavango Basin and Namibia.Joining Dirico by the track since Katwitwi is a long, beautiful and extraordinary voyage. The journey requires nearly 8 hours to travel less than 300 km, the last 40 of which can be tested for cars because of a terribly down track, and in slight gradient in places. Few vehicles are venturing beyond Calai. The arrival of a private vehicle in Chamaveratune is therefore an event. This commune, with its 4 000 inhabitants, is the most populated in the municipality of Dirico. For travel, the local population favours the boat that makes it easier for Namibia to reach its destination. The crossing to Namibia costs 50 AKZ border crossing at border crossings and takes 30 minutes. The posts open daily from 8 a. m. to 17 p. m., both in Angolans and foreigners. According to an Aboriginal man, the hippos would be visible from the shore of the commune in August and September. According to the same source, the last accident with a crocodile went back to 2010 and took the life of a woman who washed her clothes in the river.Wait for a long but beautiful journey with Plongeantes views, wonderful vistas on the flooded plains of the Okavango Basin, dazzling lights, changing landscapes. To arrive in Dirico after hours of track, heat and dust does not allow you either a shower or a fresh beer unless you are perfectly autonomous. No accommodation. No restoration points. No trade in the urban centre of Dirico. Not the smallest grocery store. Here too, the local population is sourcing in Namibia. In May 2014, we were talking about the opening of a shop and that of a fuel depot towards the end of 2014.Dirico, from the top of its promontory, overlooks the river Cuito, a tributary of the Kubango. Hurry up before dawn to the last houses of this promontory to admire the many enchanting sunrise over the Bassin basin. You can count on it because the small mornings are fresh, especially from May to September, especially in June.Beyond the confluence of the two rivers, accessible by boat only, there are visible hippos all year round. The Dirico wharf is located shortly before moving to the urban centre, arriving from the west and from Calai. No price is fixed for this boat trip to the confluence of the Cuito and Kubango and to the hippos downstream of the Kubango. In 2014, 1 000 AKZ per person is the expected price. It is likely that with the increase of visitors (very rare in May 2014), fares for boat trips from the Dirico Pier will be increased and certainly règlementés.Beyond Dirico, the 82 km of track to Mucusso takes between and. From Mucusso you can then go north and Rivungo in 5 hours with a vehicle adapted to the sand. In this part of the extreme south-eastern part of the country, there are mainly official vehicles, military personnel, customs and police services. By providing for its autonomy in fuel, and partly in water and food, it is possible to achieve a complete loop from Menongue. To reach the "Terrace do Fim do Mundo", distant, unknown, remains a challenge. Achieving them is a real victory!
