The Cimetière cemetery, as far as the city centre is concerned, seems to be larger than those of… The new housing, the "new city" on the right of the road just a few kilometres before arriving in the southwest, seems more surreal and empty than elsewhere. Eucalyptus that grows in the middle of a tank left on the road seems more unreal than elsewhere. The name «Kuito» evokes this infamous battle, this siege which lasted for long months (in 1993-94), this bloody shock between the UNITA and MPLA armies, these bombings, these street fighting, these ruins, this civilian population (mostly Ovimbundu), bruised,…, martyred city. And yet Kuito has changed! It is no longer in 2014 that ghost town described by so many journalists for a decade around the 2000 s. The town, rebuilt, expanded and modernised. The administrative buildings dating from the colonial era (when Kuito known as Silva Porto) are perfectly renovated and retain their elegance. Two longilignes and perpendicular avenues are the two main axes that mark the city centre. The air is fresh in Kuito, due to the altitude of the high plateau that the visitor easily forgets in the evening softness. The province of Bié, of which Kuito is the capital, is the form of a heart that beats well in the centre of the country!
