Located in the former Canal Zone, Summit Park was created in 1923 by the Americans to study the adaptability of various species from around the world (such as teak) to Panama's tropical climate and environment. In addition to its scientific research activities, the 55-hectare municipal park has become a recreational and educational center, where schoolchildren go to learn about the country's flora and fauna. On Sundays, large families come to picnic on the lawns or play baseball. Trails have been laid out among more than 150 species of majestic trees. An interesting museum is dedicated to the national bird, the harpy eagle, which you can see in its aviary. A small zoo at the entrance houses animals, most of which have been rescued from poaching or found injured. This may also explain why they look a little sad in their little cages... It's interesting to follow their news feed, as they regularly organize events on biodiversity and environmental issues.
