The Flinders Ranges are a mountain range stretching 430 km from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonnet, and encompassing two national parks: the Ikara - Flinders Ranges National Park in the center, and the lesser-visited Gammon Ranges National Park to the north. The best-known site is Wilpena Pound, a natural basin covering almost 80 km² and home to Saint Mary Peak (1,171 m), the highest point in the Flinders Ranges. The formation of the range began 800 million years ago. Some of the oldest animal fossils ever found were discovered in 1946 to the north of the range, in the Ediacara Hills. Ancient human occupation is attested by rock paintings and engravings dating back tens of thousands of years by the Adnyamathanha aboriginal people. The first settlers moved into the area around Quorn, to the south of the range, as early as 1845.
