Founded in 1847 by a French missionary, François Coillard, Leribe is also known as Hlotse, the neighbouring village which has now merged with Leribe. It is one of the largest towns in Lesotho. It has about 38,000 inhabitants. There is not much left from the colonial era except perhaps the Gun Tower, an old military fort and an Anglican church from 1877. Leribe is located on the north-western border of the country, opposite Ficksburg, and is not of much interest to tourists, except that it has an authentic atmosphere, and its craft centre is among the most famous in the country.
