The paved road to Katse is quite accessible. Here there is a huge dam which dominates a valley of more than 180 meters high. The town is almost better known as the Katse Dam. Indeed, it has established itself as the only attraction in the region. And for good reason, Katse Dam, the centre of the Lesotho Highland Water Project which sustains much of the country's economy, is an incredible series of dams and tunnels through the mountains, which empties into the Ash River near Clarens and supplies water to all of Johannesburg and Pretoria. It is the largest engineering project in the southern hemisphere of the 1990s.
