At an altitude of 2,040 m, glacial lake Bâlea offers a landscape of wild beauty: steep ridges, waterfalls frothing over bottomless chasms and incredible views of the Transfăgărașan, which winds its way between the mountains. Access is from the south or north, in summer. In winter, you have to take the cable car, from the Bâlea waterfall, 9 km below. Falling 50-60 m, this is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Romania. A mountain slope separates Lake Bâlea from another glacial lake, Lake Capra, and a 45-minute ascent can be envisaged, to discover the superb Buda, Raiosu and Mușeteica peaks below.
