Of volcanic origin, Bering Island is located east of the Kamchatka Peninsula, bathed by the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It was named after Captain V. Bering who ran aground there with the crew of the liner Saint-Pierre during the second Kamchatka expedition. It is the largest of the Komandorski Islands, covering an area of approximately 2,200 square kilometres. Nikolskoye, the only village in the whole archipelago, has about 750 inhabitants, 300 of whom are random. Due to their unique nature, the Komandorsky Islands form a nature reserve and are under special state protection.
