Capital of the British protectorate and Malawi from 1881 to 1974, Zomba is one of the most attractive cities in the country thanks to its plateau, its lush vegetation and its calm. Its colonial buildings, buried in the greenery, recall the English presence and give it a particular charm associated with this period. The lower town is now more lively because of its large market and shops run by the Indian community. Zomba is home to the country's largest university and Malawi's oldest prison (still in operation).
