This 548 km² park, located on the left bank of the Shire, is one of the most beautiful in the country. Enchanted Africa opens up to you here with its abundant jungle, wild animals, giant baobabs, acacia and mopane forests, lodges and breathtaking landscapes. This is (with the Majete reserve) the great destination for safaris. With its lush vegetation on the banks of the Shire, Liwonde National Park has the highest concentration of animals in the country: 2,000 elephants and as many hippos (one of the highest densities in Africa), hundreds of voracious crocodiles, thousands of antelopes (impala, kudus, etc.), zebras, buffalo, warthogs, baboons and a few rare predators (leopards, hyenas, jackals...). About thirty black rhinos are also present, recently reintroduced into a sanctuary. Ten lions, from South Africa and Majete, and about fifteen cheetahs, the last trace of which in the vicinity was about 100 years ago, were also reintroduced in 2017 and 2018. The park is distinguished by its 360 species of birds; it is a paradise for ornithologists who can, during boat safaris, observe kingfishers, eagles and herons, among others. Lodges allow you to enjoy the reserve. Spending the night there listening to the mysterious sounds of the jungle is an unforgettable experience.
