Located on the Nankumba Peninsula, Cape Maclear or, in the vernacular language, Chembe is a fishing village that has evolved over the past twenty years into a coastal resort. The site, bordered by the crystal clear waters of the lake and framed by wooded mountains, is a corner of paradise. This now famous tourist spot has never ceased to delight travellers since David Livingstone. It was the Scottish explorer who "discovered" the site, at the turn of the 1860s and 1870s, and named it after his astronomer friend, Thomas Maclear. With its festive and magical atmosphere, Cape Maclear nowadays attracts many backpackers and expatriates who come to relax on the sandy beaches of Lake Malawi. It is also an essential stopover for any traveller travelling through the country or across southern Africa. Lodges and water activities abound (swimming, canoeing, scuba diving, fishing, water skiing...).
