The town of Metapán, whose name means río ("agave river"), was populated by native Chorti natives in the pre-Columbian era and occupied by the Peuple people.As the largest municipality in El Salvador with 668 square kilometres, Metapán remains unknown. Its only tourist attractions are Montecristo National Park and Güija lake. There is also one of the most beautiful colonial churches in the country, the temple of Saint-Pierre-Apostle (San Pedro Apóstol templo), built between 1736 and 1743. It celebrates the employers'celebrations of the Saint from 26 to 29 June.Geologically, the city is located in the oldest area of El Salvador. Rocks date from Jurassic era (Cretaceous) and consist of quartz and limestone. The Territory also has large deposits of iron, lead, copper, gold, silver and zinc. But it is mainly the limestone that forms the basis of the region's industry, since it is used in the production of cement.Isidro Menéndez, one of the signatories of the act of independence of 21 September 1821, was born in Metapán. He is recognized as the father of Salvadoran legislation.
