A few kilometers before Bergendal, Klaaskreek is a small, unassuming black-brown village. After the construction of the Brokopondo dam in 1965, several black-maroon and Amerindian villages were relocated: Klaaskreek, Brownsberg and Brokopondo were among them. In return, the government built "makeshift houses" to relocate them, but these are tiny and the displaced population continues to suffer from this forced relocation.
