They are three islands in the extreme south of the continent, east of Navarino Island. Isolated from the mainland, they are almost uninhabited: every year, small groups of Chilean sailors take turns to watch over the navigation and the safety of the boats crossing the area. Wild territories, the islands were also an area of conflict: in 1978 Argentine troops tried to seize them, but the intervention of John Paul II led to a peace treaty. Identified as one of the last wilderness areas of the planet, these islands are still unexploited.
