The city of Rochester is the 3rd largest city in New York State. In the middle of the 19th century, it was nicknamed The Flour City because of the large number of mills that made it the first flour producer. Its proximity to Lake Ontario made it an important industrial platform. It is now known as The Flower City (same pronunciation) because of the annual lilac festival in May. Rochester is not just about flowers; the population of just over 1,000,000 people, many of whom are students, makes Rochester a city rich in diverse activities: family attractions, festivals and international events, proximity to the Finger Lakes. The city is also a central point in the history of civil rights and women's rights. Susan B. Anthony, a 19th century activist, spent his entire life fighting for women's right to vote from his headquarters in Rochester. She is a friend of Frederick Douglass, who, born a slave, became the most famous American abolitionist. He spent 25 years in Rochester and published his newspaper The North Star here. Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass are both buried in the city's Mount Hope Cemetery.Fans of history, discoveries, art or outdoor activities, Rochester will charm you.
