Blanche Marie and its magnificent waterfalls are an absolute must-see (either in total immersion or with a tour operator). The area is home to all kinds of animals, which you're sure to spot, including monkeys (8 species) and birds (no fewer than 200 species). The falls are one of the largest in Suriname, and were discovered in 1897 by Nickerie district commissioner Lieutenant Van Drimmelen. He named them after his wife, Mary White. Not far from Blanche Marie Falls, on the Nickerie River, are Eldorado Falls, 300 km from Paramaribo.
