Bigi Pan is an estuarine area on the northwest coast, influenced by the tides. Its lagoon is rich in nutrients, as salt water from the sea mixes with fresh water (from the South American mainland). Created in 1987 as a MUMA(Multiple Use Management Area), it extends over almost 68,000 hectares. This creates a highly specific and important environment in terms of flora and fauna: it's a veritable nursery for fry, as the young fish are protected from predators by vegetation. The role of this type of environment is therefore crucial to the preservation of Surinamese and, more broadly, marine biodiversity. Among these different environments, you'll discover mudflats, sandy beaches, mangroves and water lagoons: the name Bigi Pan meaning "big lake".The great attraction of Bigi Pan also lies in the diversity of bird species that live there: beginners, but also passionate ornithologists and scientists are all attracted by this marvellous site. It's an opportunity to discover some of the migratory birds heading for North America or Canada that you'll never see elsewhere. Bigi Pan is home to one of the largest breeding colonies of red ibis in the world: their flight is a sight not to be missed!Bigi Pan is also an ideal place to relax and unwind: from the comfort of your stilt lodge, you can enjoy the magnificent sunset and the natural mud baths.
