Awarradam is a small island in the Gran Rio River, home to Suriname's largest black-brown population: the Saramacca Luangu. The Black-Browns are the descendants of slaves who fled the plantations and resisted: they took refuge inland, along the rivers, to create their own community. The island of Awarradam was entrusted to METS in 1992 by its inhabitants, with a view to developing tourism. After six months' hard work, a dozen Black Maroons transformed the island into a magnificent lodge: in 1993, Awarradam Jungle Lodge & Spa welcomed its first visitors.
