This national park, on land and in the sea, is best known for its famous Cape Horn. It includes the Wollaston Islands and the Hermit Islands, of which Horn Island and its famous cape are a part. Until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914, the Drake Passage was the preferred passage for ships wishing to link Europe to Asia. A cape beaten by waves, winds and drifting icebergs, feared by the cape-horners and a veritable marine cemetery. Today, the biggest round-the-world races - led by the Vendée Globe - regularly cross it, as do certain excursions and other fishing trawlers
