To the northwest of the city of Bergen op Zoom, lies the peninsula of Tholen with the capital city of the same name. It takes its name from tolhuis , which means customs house in French. The municipality has 25,500 inhabitants. The town is historical and picturesque, and was granted its rights in 1366. Like other cities in Zeeland, it has been regularly flooded over the years. Its center is fortified and limited by a harbor. The whole area is now a protected landscape and the monuments are also protected. Of note is the beautiful Brabant church of Our Lady and the two beautiful mills, De Hoop and De Verwachting, renovated in 2009.
