Hertenrits is Suriname's smallest reserve, covering just 100 hectares. Founded in 1972, it is located in the Nickerie district. Although there is certainly wildlife near the coast and mangroves, its territory is protected because it is of inestimable value to Surinamese cultural heritage: pre-Columbian remains have been found here. Hertenrits bears witness to a pottery tradition, and human remains have been found in four locations, along with numerous materials of animal origin, such as manatees, catfish and crabs. Human bones were preserved in urns.
