The Furnes Grand Place is lined with elegant buildings, which reflect the city's prosperity during the Spanish period. The th century Renaissance City Hotel made the corner with the châtellenie, then the courthouse, the landhuis, in the th century. Together, they make up an attractive picture with the juxtaposition of a stone color with contrasting nuances: The City Hotel with its rounded arches and warm stone, the châtellenie châtellenie and the cold shades. The imposing tower that surpasses it is the belfry. The City Hotel, which is recognized on its turret, which ends in pear form, was the Belgian army's headquarters during the 1914-1918 war. You can admire the sumptuous interior during a guided tour. The rooms, whose walls are decorated with leather in Mechelen, host th and th century furniture, portraits of the Albert and Isabelle archiducs, as well as a painting by Paul Delvaux, Furnes Girl of Furnes. On the Grand-Place is also the old meat hall (1615), which now houses the Academy of Fine Arts of the Perpetuation. Behind the Renaissance facades, the monumental forms of two Gothic churches are raised: St. Nicholas Church and Church Sainte-Walburge.
