The small coastal city of Veurne has a rich historical past. His origins are Roman, but the name of Furna is quoted as early as 877 in an act of Saint-Bertin Abbey in Saint-Omer. To protect himself against the Norman assailants, she becomes a fortified and influential city that swears allegiance to the earl of Flanders. As in many Flemish cities, the textile industry and the agricultural economy are participating in Veurne's prosperity, but by its geographical location it has suffered from the incessant fighting between Flemish towns and King of France. From the fifteenth century and especially in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with a new prosperity, are built many buildings of the city, such as the Spanish Officers' Pavilion, today the city hall. The possession of the city by Louis XIV brings new fortifications, due to Vauban, which remains a few remains. In 1971 and 1977, ten villages - Houtem, Vikem, Bulskamp, Zoutenaaie - merged with Veurne to form the vast common pool. Today Veurne remains largely known for its procession of Penitents, for its museum of la Boulangerie and for its picturesque aspect preserved by the vagaries of history. Indeed, Veurne is one of the only cities in Belgium that suffered only minor damage during the First World War. During this period, the city was the headquarters of King Albert. Thus, despite its great proximity to the front lines, Veurne retains its magnificent heritage of origin. The gourmet ends have more than one reason to go to Veurne: Ham, white puck, Beauvoorde pâté, kletskoppen - almond and hazelnut biscuits - or beer will delight their palate! In short, between historical, culinary and small picturesque villages in the surrounding area, Veurne has everything to surprise you and seduce you. Break your bike and go to discover the unique landscape of the Moës.
