Torhout is a charming little town in the hinterland of Bruges. It is the oldest town in the county of Flanders. During the development of the county in the 11th century, Torhout was chosen as one of its centres of influence. The city was very famous from the 11th to the 13th century, but then went through a dark period until the 16th century. During this period, it suffered greatly from the wars of religion. It will find a certain splendour only from the 17th century. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Torhout continued to develop thanks to the development of the railway. Today it is a quiet tourist town.
