The charming little town of Tielt has about 20,000 inhabitants. It is located in the heart of West Flanders. It has been a free municipality since 1275 and has been an important centre for cloth production and trade since the Middle Ages. Numerous windmills, typical of the region, line the "Windmill Route". This picturesque route also passes through the flower village of Kanegem, which displays its horticultural finery throughout the summer and was awarded the Entente Florale prize in 1976. Since 1959, Tielt has defined itself as a European city and every year organises large popular festivals called the Europe Festivals.
