Pupurninga villa, "the residence of the Pupurn family", was the ancient name of Poperinge. The first written mention of the town dates back to the 9th century, but we know that it was already inhabited in the Neolithic period.Until the 15th century, Poperinge built its prosperity on the cloth industry. Indeed, when the Count of Flanders decided to prohibit the town from producing the cloth for which it was famous, the inhabitants showed a fierce determination to defend their rights. This determination earned them the nickname Keikoppen... the stubborn ones! However, the economic war that pitted Poperinge against Ypres led to the decline of its cloth industry and prompted the town to turn to hop growing. A rich idea that continues to provide the town with a real economic fabric today, as 80% of Belgian hops are still produced here.Poperinge also played an important role in the First World War. Situated directly behind the front lines, camps and hospitals were set up in the town, and many soldiers came to Poperinge for treatment and, above all, for a little rest. As the town was one of the few not to have been occupied by the Germans, its restaurants, hotels, cinemas and cabarets were full of Allied soldiers, so much so that it quickly earned the nickname "Pop", an affectionate sobriquet for the town that served as a decompression chamber for these young soldiers. However, the town was not spared the destruction and, like many places, Poperinge had to rebuild. However, it has not forgotten this painful past, and numerous museums, cemeteries and memorials will enable visitors to immerse themselves in it and learn more about the men and women who sacrificed themselves for their country.Today, Poperinge is renowned as the capital of well-being. The many terraces and restaurants, the peaceful atmosphere combined with the monuments and shops will win you over. And let's not forget the popular festivals, which are a highlight in the lives of the locals. Every three years in September, the Triennale du Houblon attracts thousands of visitors to watch the procession. And every October, beer lovers flock to the Fête de la Bière to sample the latest releases from local producers.
