After the horrors of the two wars, some of which were fought in the vicinity of the town, Damme gradually became a quiet little town, focusing on its heritage and natural resources. Literature is omnipresent here, since Jacob van Maerlant lived and worked here, but Damme remains above all the town of Ulenspiegel (Till the Mischievous), and can, since 1997, proclaim itself the first book village in Flanders. It can also pride itself on its gastronomy, since cheeses, beers and local liqueurs are made on site. A small town with a doll's village feel, Damme has a thousand treasures to offer!
