This city of 43,000 inhabitants is situated on the banks of the Leie, 20 minutes by car from Ghent (10 minutes by direct train). It is best known for its church, Our Lady of Deinze, and its magnificent carillon which gives rhythm to the local life with its melodies. Throughout the Middle Ages, this city relied on its drapery industry to flourish, before developing other industries, notably that of linen. Deinze is also famous for its tapestries, some of which can still be seen in the museum of this city, which was destroyed more than once between the 14th and 18th centuries.
