Aalst (Aalst in Flemish) is an industrial, working-class town whose textile factories have disappeared. It is now a labor pool for Brussels and Ghent. Before that, it was a vassal of the Holy Roman Empire, when most of Flanders was a vassal of France. In addition to Louis-Paul Boon, Aalst is home to 15th-century printer Dirk Martens. He imported the art of printing to the Southern Netherlands and played a role in promoting humanism in Europe. Pieter Van Aelst (15th).
