A thousand-year-old city, Andenne is firmly established on the banks of the Meuse downstream from Namur. Charles Martel was born here and is said to have killed a dangerous bear that became a symbol. Andenne is thus nicknamed the City of the Bears. The city is famous for its collegiate church Sainte-Begge and for the Scladina cave (prehistoric rock cavity). The Lighthouse, an unusual place, houses a museum dedicated to ceramics, a local industry of the past and to prehistory. Andenne was hit hard by the First World War, various traces testify. Nearby, the Samson valley gathers a concentration of castles, Romanesque churches, farms and blue stone houses.
