Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet lie at the foot of Montrachet (Mont Chauve), a small, rocky hill that produces some of the most sought-after white wines in the world. Alexandre Dumas said of this wine that "it should be drunk on your knees with your head uncovered", and Stendhal was astonished that such a dry, ugly little mountain could produce such a great wine. Vines were planted here over 2,000 years ago. An orientation table shows the location of the Premiers Crus (18) and Grands Crus (4) climats. It's pleasant to stroll through the streets, where the beauty of stone is everywhere: opulent houses, châteaux, fountains, churches, porches, low walls...
