The Hesbaye is one of the most fertile land in Europe and, in prehistoric times, the first farmers, who chose to settle themselves, to cultivate the land and raise the cattle rather than continue to live the hazards of hunting and gathering, understood very quickly the interest of this region and settled there sustainably. In several villages in the region (Vaux-Borset, Chapon-Seraing or Verlaine, for example) Neolithic remains were uncovered. In Roman times, the region was on the Tongeren-Arlon axis, the two oldest Gallo-Roman cities in Belgium. A sign of importance for the time, a bridge was even built on the Meuse at the height of Ombret (Amay). Head valley and hesbignon plateau: these were already the diverse ingredients which today give the country of Hesbaye Meuse its double face and its natural wealth and heritage. The Francs left to Amay such rare and precious traces. Dungeons and castles flourished in the Middle Ages, sometimes transformed later into pleasure homes or castles.Religious congregations also elected the place to introduce sumptuous abbeys. The Industrial Revolution also affected this part of the Head valley… It is clear, the country of Hesbaye Meuse is a land of history and heritage. At the beginning of Amay, the visitor will therefore be able to drink a variety of landscapes and dream at very different times. If the Hesbaye is not strictly a region where mass tourism is practised, it has a rather rich rural heritage. For example, there is a common feature in the villages of Hesbaye: groupé habitat, orchards and gardens. The rest of the landscaped environment is composed of large campaigns divided by roads linking them to villages, farm farms, mills or charming rural churches.
