La Louvière has grown with its economic and industrial development. The town owes its success to the establishment of the Royal Boch earthenware factory. The Centre de la Céramique Kéramis is a fine exhibition space for today's ceramists. Today, the town still bears witness to a heritage linked to coal mining, the steel industry and river transport, several sites of which are listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites. The mining town of Bois-du-Luc, in particular, will take you back a century; the boat elevators and their canal invite you to experience a change of scenery through superb walks along the waterways to the giant elevator at Strépy-Thieu. The town also boasts a dynamic cultural scene, with the Mill Museum showcasing the work of Romanian sculptor Idel Ianchelevici.
