In the south of the province of Hainaut, this small princely town's main attraction is its castle, the brewery of the eponymous Trappist fathers (even though it is not open to the public) and its cheese. Chimay has always had a prestigious reputation. Even today, beer and cheese give the city of Chimay an international reputation. During the last millennium, it was its castle, first as a count and then as a prince, that opened the doors to the world. The Oise River, essentially French and a tributary of the Seine, has its source close to the Abbey of Scourmont where Chimay is made and to the Auberge de Poteaupré where it is sold.
