Illhaeusern is a former fishing village founded in the 14th century by the Fischerzunft guild. Its name comes from the Ill, the river that runs through the village nestled in a bucolic setting. Its two churches are famous for their stained-glass windows. The church of Saints Peter and Paul (1958) is surmounted by a wrought-iron fish. It conceals a superb contemporary style altarpiece by the Strasbourg artist Christoff Baron on boards of used pallets left in their raw state. In addition to two excellent restaurants, Illhaeusern is a good starting point to discover the Illwald nature reserve and the Ried by canoe!
