Located 15 km from Antwerp, Lierre is a typical Flemish provincial town with its many shops, triangular Grand-Place, Saint-Gommaire church and network of narrow streets with ochre-colored houses. The town is best known for its astronomical clock, built by Louis Zimmer in 1930. But the charm of the town center and, above all, the beguinage and the banks of the Deux Nèthes, the rivers that run through the town, are also very pleasant. The town is still surrounded by its 16th-century fortifications, which consist of a belt of tree-lined embankments running parallel to the water ditch. Lierre is also easily reached by train from Antwerp, or by bike.
