You may have already heard of Saransk, the capital of the Republic of Mordovia, some 500 km south-east of Moscow. Hitherto famous above all for the large number of penitentiary centres it hosts, Mordovia has been much talked about in recent years for a completely different reason: it was in Saransk that Gérard Depardieu had - in theory - taken up residence, and was to assume the post of Mordovian Minister of Culture. Saransk, sadly known in Russia because of the Gulag, has indeed been groping for a long time in search of its image.
