It is a picturesque, typically Tyrolean village in the Lechtal valley on the fan of the Höhenbach stream, first mentioned in 1315 as Holzge and later as Holzgaw. The village of Holzgau has been an independent parish since 1401 and is home to one of the oldest churches in Tyrol, the St. Sebastian's Chapel, built in 1497, whose original frescoes are worth a visit. The village is known for its houses with painted facades, some of which have been beautifully renovated in recent decades. The regional museum gives a good overview of the past life in the upper part of the Lech valley. If you want to explore the surroundings of the village, you will find the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Austria (110 meters high and 200 meters long) and the Simms waterfall (by following the Lech hiking trail). The Lech Valley is a protected natural area where the mountain is in its raw state, wild, impressive but beautiful. The river Lech flows through the valley and the famous Lechtaler Höhenweg (hiking trail) leads through authentic villages and beautiful landscapes down to the Stuibenfälle waterfall.Along the way, you will discover the last woodcarving school in Austria, the highest suspension bridge in the country, one of the oldest churches and the last cheese factory. From May to June, you will enjoy the beauty of the Venus hoof fields (flowers living up to 30 years), you will taste (with moderation) the "snaps" still distilled in a traditional way by the farmers of the valley in contact with the inhabitants of the Lech valley, on the way to discover a generosity and a frank and warm welcome.
