About 50 km south of Polonnaruwa. Maduru Oya was declared a national park in 1983 and covers an area of just under 230 km2. It used to be the favorite hunting ground of the Veddas, who were forced to settle down and were relocated outside the park. Many wild animals are to be discovered there and a museum of the fauna is located at the entry of the park. The northeastern monsoon extends from October to the end of January and the rainfall is quite high. Ruins can be found at Henanigala, Kudawila, Gurukumbura, Uluketangoda, Werapokuna and several other places. A sluice probably dating from before the 6th century B.C. has been discovered there. Inscriptions dating from the 3rd century B.C. were found at Kandegamakanda.
