Created in 1954, this park of 64,000 ha is located in a dry zone, mainly under the influence of the north-east monsoon. There are several waterholes, including the huge Senanayake Samudra reservoir. Elephants are numerous and the most interesting excursion to make is the boat ride which allows to see the pachyderms drinking. The best time to visit is between March and late August. The Gal Oya valley may have been occupied by Sinhalese kings at three places: Deeghawapi, Govindahela and Nilgala. The mountainous region to the west was one of the last strongholds of the Veddas.
