From Gondar, you can organize an interesting excursion to the Gorgora peninsula, 48 km south of the city, on the shores of Lake Tana. It's not very touristy, as access is complicated, but its history is important. Unfortunately, a lodge once existed here, but has now closed. To get here, you have to take a difficult track through many villages, so expect to see a lot of people and observe the authentic life of the Ethiopians in this Amhara region. Don't expect to visit the town on the road between Gondar and Bahar Dar, as the detour is too long. In or just after the rainy season, mud prevents access.Gorgora was one of the country's important capitals during the reign of Emperor Susenyos I and his son Fasilidas. The town takes its name from an important saint in the Ethiopian Orthodox religion, Saint Gregory the Illuminator, in Greek Gregorios. However, Emperor Fasilidas preferred to settle in Gondar. Temperatures were milder there, as the site is at a higher altitude. In addition, mosquitoes and malaria were not as prevalent as in Gorgora, on the hot, humid shores of the lake.
