The expedition to the Gunda Gunde monastery is reserved for hardy hikers (eight-hour walk from Adigrat) and men. It is essential to find a guide and bring your own provisions. On the outward journey, the rocky path descends steeply, offering spectacular views of the surrounding, increasingly arid mountains, before winding through a lush wadi dotted with orchards. The monastery has a community of around 30 monks. The local people are Erob, a branch of the Afar, who speak a dialect called Saho, abide by Afar customary laws and practice Islam.
