Petit Futé's opinion on ABOUNA YEMATA (GUH)

Vintage plate 2020

This church is probably the most difficult to access, due to its spectacular location, buried as it is in the heart of a rocky peak, which can be seen from Mariam Korkor at the end of the rocky façade that stretches to the northwest. After a good hour of climbing, many people give up in the final stretch: a small cliff with irregular holes to hold on to, feet and hands, a few dead branches used as a ramp - and recently, finally, a rope to pass through the most dangerous wall passage. Nevertheless, if you feel dizzy, go on your way. Those who overcome the obstacle will not regret it: the entrance to the church is located at the end of a narrow passage along a vertiginous cliff. Borrowing it on these few meters is the big thrill guaranteed. Once the eyes have become accustomed to the darkness, the frescoes that decorate the sanctuary are discovered inside. They are described as the most refined ever discovered in the Tigray region. On the ceiling of the entrance, nine characters in a circle are identified by inscriptions as eight of the apostles and, according to an unconfirmed thesis, the brother of Christ is represented. On the other dome, eight characters in the same posture represent eight of the nine Syrian saints, responsible, according to tradition, for the evangelization of the country from the sixth century onwards. The ninth, Abouna Yemata himself, is depicted straddling one of the walls. The freshness of the colours is an indication of the date of these paintings from the 15th or 16th century. The young priest who takes care of this church will gladly show you old Bibles in Ghèze, very richly illustrated and well preserved.

Warning. Due to the success of this church, which is more and more frequented, the "helpers" to the rope do not hesitate to try to racket tourists (whereas the rope was provided free of charge by an association to strengthen a little the security of the site). They ask for 100 birrs each after helping you down, so on the way back, even if it means blocking your way if you don't comply. Don't let it happen because it's not normal, give 50 birrs per person helped, it's already more than enough. The priest will also ask for 100 birrs per person, again 50 birrs will be enough or 100 birrs for a small group.
