Among the first cities to be established in the late 18th century, Jiaoshi stood out because of its hot springs. During the Qing Dynasty, the inhabitants developed these colourless and odourless springs by erecting walls all around to ensure the peace and quiet of the bathers, then under the Japanese occupation, the place took on a more sophisticated appearance with the construction of basins and numerous hotels. Nicknamed Little Beitou, Jiaoshi developed, like his older brother, under the Japanese administration, around the hot springs with their healing properties, an important prostitution activity which has now disappeared. Apart from the hot springs, the city's biggest attraction is the site of the Wufengchi Falls.
