Known by its tourist name of White Lake, this large lake of 161 km2 is one of the most beautiful in Mongolia, and the result of the volcanic irruption of Mount Khorgo. The lava has indeed blocked the Terkh River to the north and south, resulting in the formation of a natural dam, and thus this lake, located at 2 060 meters above sea level. The shores of the "Great White Lake" are forested and surrounded by craters and petrified lava flows, which give the landscape a very special atmosphere. The area serves as a stopover for many migratory birds, especially since the lake, the volcano and their surroundings are now included in the national park Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur. Shallow (between 4 and 10 meters), the lake is suitable for fishing but also for swimming. The lake is mainly used for fishing for perch and pike. The closest village to the lake is called Tariat. With barely 7,000 inhabitants, there is not much to do or see there.
