To the south-west of Mindelo town, after the airport, you come upon a beautiful ribbon of white sand, bordered by a tempting sea, but beware of currents and breakers. For windsurfers, this is one of the best places in the world for speed events, as the wind, channelled between two mountains, is strong enough. Good waves are always on hand to satisfy bodyboarding and surfing enthusiasts. Nearby is a fishing village built at the foot of the mountain. Take a stroll there to admire the day's catch, while enjoying some grilled fish (tuna or grouper) accompanied by a cold beer or punch. People are friendly and welcoming if you make the effort to approach them. From here, you can take a beautiful walk along the mountainside overlooking the sea. Along a path clinging to the wall, which narrows in places, you reach the historic São Pedro lighthouse, which was built at the end of the 19th century but, surprisingly, is still in operation. There are only two lighthouses on the island, the other being on an islet in Mindelo Bay. A plaque informs you that construction began in 1893. The hike offers breathtaking views over the whole of São Pedro Bay. Along the way, you'll pass a small cove sheltered from the wind, where you can take a break or go for a swim. The round trip takes around 1h30, but beware of gusts of wind and vertigo if you're prone to acrophobia.
