When you're on an island, it would be a shame not to take some time out to discover the hinterland, after enjoying the pleasures of the beach. Monte Verde is the perfect place for an original walk, ideal for a breath of fresh air. In a flat, arid environment, this mountain is the highest point in the area, reaching 774 m in altitude. Don't forget to bring warm clothes with you, as the temperature can drop as soon as you start climbing the slopes. And if possible, hire a local guide to avoid any unpleasant encounters. To get there, leave Mindelo along the Rua de Coco and take the Baia road, which will take you to the foot of the mountain after about 8 km. You can take an aluguer to Baia das Gatas and be dropped off at the foot of the mountain, or make the same journey by cab. From 600 m upwards, the wet, green slopes are home to terraced crops, including the countless agaves and sisals used to make the baskets sold in craft stores and markets. As the climb progresses, layers of fog transform the landscape, giving it an air of mystery. Once at the summit, easily accessible on foot (1h30-2h walk) or climbed by car up the cliffside (paved mountain road, slippery! 4x4 recommended), the wind dissipates them, revealing breathtaking panoramas over the bay of Porto Grande and the islands of Santa Luzia and São Nicolau. It's a breathtaking and rewarding experience.
