In a flat and arid environment, Monte Verde is the highest point in the area, at 774 m above sea level. Bring a small amount of wool before you go for a walk, as it can get chilly. To get there, leave Mindelo along the Rua de Coco and take the road to Baia which will lead you to the foot of the mountain after about 8 km. It is possible to take an aluguer in the direction of Baia das Gatas and be dropped off at the foot of the mountain. On its lush green slopes grow innumerable agaves and sisals that are used to make baskets sold in craft shops and markets. As you go up the hill, sheets of fog transform the landscape and give it an air of mystery. Once at the summit, on foot (1h30 walk) or by car (beware, paved mountain road, it can be slippery!), the wind dissipates them and reveals beautiful panoramas over the bay of Porto Grande and the islands of Santa Luzia and São Nicolau.
