This small town of 48,000 inhabitants, in the province of Sorsogon, became famous all of a sudden in January 1998, when a certain Romir Aglugub (a PADI instructor) discovered that the big fish that populated the offshore waters were not dangerous, as the locals thought, but that they were harmless and... magical whale sharks! Since then, Donsol has proclaimed itself "whale shark watching capital of the world". In 2006, five specimens were found dead on the coast, shot at close range. Since then, every effort has been made to try to protect this exceptional natural "heritage".
