Donsol, in the province of Sorsogon, is a lovely little town that suddenly became famous in January 1998, when a certain Romir Aglugub (a PADI instructor) discovered that the big fish that populated the waters off the coast were not dangerous, as the locals thought, but were harmless and... magical whale sharks! Since then, Donsol has proclaimed itself as the "whale shark watching capital of the world". This seaside village is reached by a serpentine road lined with lush vegetation and dotted with traditional huts, sari-saris, stray dogs and carabaos, and of course children leaving school in uniform, in short, a summary of the particularities of the Philippines but in a calmer and more authentic atmosphere. Along the coast, several resorts parade discreetly.
