AVALA HILL (ПЛАНИНА ПЛАНИНА)

When driving on this hill, observe, one kilometre before arriving at the summit, the monument to Russian generals killed during an aircraft crash in October 1964, when they celebrated the 20 ^th anniversary of Liberation. We must know that Belgrade was liberated by the Red Army in October 1944, while Tito's supporters were still discussing in the mountains of southern Serbia. Arrive near the summit, park behind the Avala Hotel and climb the monumental staircase leading to the summit, at 511 m altitude. There lies the famous tomb of the Unknown Hero erected in honour of the dead of the First World War. Dating back to 1934, this monumental structure of black marble signed Ivan Meštrović was built at the location of a Serb fortress called Žrnov. Under a classic roof and between Greek columns, eight imposing caryatids each represent a mother of a soldier of a different nationality, all forming Yugoslavia at the Time.
