North of the Selenge River, the site of Bai Bulag is a set of ruins of the Uyghur civilization, the same one that gave its alphabet to the Mongols reunified under Chinggis Khaan in the 13th century. There, in the sum of Khutag, was an important cultural and commercial center. This Silk Road trading post took advantage of its location to promote trade and was very active in the 9th and 10th centuries. Later, the Mongols built a Buddhist monastery on the ruins of this ancient city.
